The Feminine Factor: Our Secret to Hi-Performance Everything
By some stroke of luck, Susan Peterson was gifted with a brain and a personality that seem to work equally well in traditionally defined male or female roles. This proclivity led her to study engineering in the mid-70’s, and to stick with it throughout a forty-year career in highly male-dominated hi-tech fields, which only became more male-dominated as she rose through the executive ranks. Sometimes it was fun to be the only woman in the room. Sometimes it was maddening.
Susan graduated Summa Cum Laude in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University at a time when there were no working women’s bathrooms in the engineering building. She started her career as a structural engineer, then moved into coding CAD programs for architects and engineers. She has an executive MBA from the University of Denver, which helped her to move up the ranks in sales and product marketing executive management in industries ranging from Construction, Electronic Design Automation and Telecom to Renewable Energy.
Susan was given a front row seat from which to observe the differences between the way men conduct themselves and the way women, like her, might behave differently. She knows from whence she speaks. She learned to talk like them, but she still walks like her.
